While it may be obvious, to achieve political advantage is to be able to control both media and space. But, as we all saw, the shutdown of the Mubarak-ordered Internet Service Providers in Egypt did not stop the occupation of Tharir Square, in fact, it was a catalyst for action and movement. While maybe this attempt of graphing this balance does not make all things clear, it does emphasize the importance of having public space to occupy when effecting change in Politics. This notion is easily supported by the Occupy movement. While Social Media platforms engage diverse populations and spread ideas quickly, they can not replace the occupation of public spaces to exchange and encounter ideas and beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian revolution was able to use media against the Mubarak regime, consequently producing an inverse relationship control of place and control of media. If Mubarak struck against the cell phone wielding protestors, these unfortunate events immediately increased media attention. Conversely, when Mubarak shut down the Service Providers, Egyptians were compelled to meet together, face to face.
