After the announcement last week that the Taliban were to open an office in Qatar; the clash in typologies was instantly apparent. As many are aware, the Taliban leaders are educated, intelligent people, so using logic, it is not a stretch to see them in a corporate office environment. BUT, the media never portrays them in that way. Americans imagine Taliban leaders meeting in caves, sand and dust swirling around, and automatic guns as accessories.
The announcement of a “permanent” occupation of a place (office) in Qatar means acceptance of a shared responsibility, of recognition of stakeholders in the crisis which may be able to negotiate in an office. Because thats what the typology of a board room is for, negotiation and diplomacy. By the mere announcement of what kind of place the Taliban chooses to occupy, one can immediately infer functions of that space.
